Appendix is a small finger shaped organ located on the right side of your abdomen in the lower part. Appendix has no specific function in our body but is the most common reason for abdominal surgeries. The appendix can get blocked due to hardened stool and some other bacterial infection which causes inflammation. This results in pain whcih normally begins around the navel region and moves to the right lower abdomen. The pain could be mild or severe. If you experience these symptoms, you should immediately contact the nearest surgeon who would perform physical examination. Appendix is mostly diagnosed on physical examination and confirmed by an ultrasound scan. Ultrasound exam does not always show acute appendicitis and sometimes a CT Scan might be required. The risk in acute appendicitis is that the appendix might rupture and the infection can spread in the abdominal cavity which could pose serious threat to the life. In cases of ruptured appendix, the doctor might prescribe you some antibiotics which may help. The best solution for acute appnedicitis is always surgical excision of the inflamed appendix.
Since appendix has no specific function in our body, it is always the best option to get it removed through surgery whenever the patient is faced with acute appendicitis. Even if the inflammation subsides and the pain is resolved, it may recur at any time in the future and if this happens while you are travelling or in a flight, the situation can become quite tricky. These days most of the appnedix surgeries are done using a laparoscope in which the hospital stay gets reduced to just 2 days and the recovery is also much faster. In Laparoscopic Appendicectomy, the surgeon will make three small holes around your waistline and perform the surgery through these holes. No incision needs to be given and therefore there are no stitches after the surgery. The holes which are less than 1 cm in diameter are closed using stapler pins or surgical glue. Eating a high fiber diet is known to lower the risk for acute appendicitis as has been seen in several countries where such a diet is more common.

However if you are holding an insurance policy which has been provided by your company then the surgery is covered from day one. You also have to check the room rent eligibility in your insurance policy to make sure that you get the complete claim amount and there are no deductions. If you opt for a higher category room than what you are eligible for, then you may have to bear some expenses for your treatment.
