Echocardiography or echo, is a painless test that uses sound waves to create moving pictures of your heart. The pictures show the size and shape of your heart. They also show how well your heart's chambers and valves are working. This test is done on a Colour Doppler Machine. At Siddh Hospital we have the most advanced machine for Echocardiography manufactured by Siemens Germany. This machine gives very accurate measurements of the various cardiac parameters. Our Cardiologist has a long experience of more than 22 years in the field of Preventive Cardiology.
Echocardiography also can pinpoint areas of heart muscle that aren't contracting well because of poor blood flow or injury from a previous heart attack. A type of echo called Doppler ultrasound shows how well blood flows through your heart's chambers and valves. A healthy heart must have an Ejection Fraction of 60% which means that each time your heart contracts it pumps 60% of the blood from the Left Ventricle to the Aorta. If the ejection fraction is low it means that heart will have to work more to pump the same amount of blood and this may slowly lead to heart failure. So getting an echocardiography regularly is a cheap and effective way of finding about the health of your heart.
2D Echocardiography is a study of your heart in resting state while Treadmill is the study of your heart when it moves from Resting to Exercise phase. When you exercise, work or do any kind of strenuous work then the heart rate increases as the heart has to pump more blood to the different parts of the body. In this situation sometimes the function of the heart gets impaired. This study is done on a Treadmill machine. However we can study the heart while exercising by either doing echocardiography while the patient is on the treadmill or by using Dobutamine which is a chemical used to increase the heart rate. This test is known as Stress Echo or Dobutamine Stress Echo.
