Most of the women have two ovaries which are located on either side of the uterus and form an important part of the female reproductive system. The ovaries produce eggs which are fertilized by the male sperm resulting in pregnancy. The ovaries also produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone which makes a woman feminine. Cysts are fluid filled sacs which develop inside one or both the ovaries. The most commonly found cysts are the follicle cyst, corpus luteum cyst, dermoid cyst and the the endometriomas. The best thing about most of the ovarian cysts is that they do not cause any symtpoms and are mostly diagnosed when you are unsucessful in getting pregnant despite trying for some time. However some of the females may suffer from pain in the bowel, pain before and after the menstrual cycle, pain in the thighs or lower back and pain during sexual intercourse. Some females may suffer from more severe symptoms like fever, faintness, dizziness and rapid breathing. Ovarian cysts can be easily diagnosed on an ultrasound scan which may be followed with MRI Pelvis and some blood tests to rule out ovarian cancer. Most of the cysts do not require any treatment and would disappear in a few months time on their own. However you must follow up with your gynaecologist who may do a repeat ultrasound scan to check the status of the ovaries and the cyst inside them.
Most of the cysts would not require any medicines but if the cysts do not disappear on their own and are interfering in your efforts to get pregnant then your gynaecologist may prescribe some medicines to shrink the cyst or to prevent its growth. Smaller cysts in the ovaries can be removed surgically using a Laparoscope but if the cyst is large then abdominal surgery might be required for removing it. If the doctor suspects malignancy then instead of removing the cysts, the gynaecologist may advice you to get the ovaries removed and in some cases even the uterus and the fallopian tubes alongwith the ovaries. Though most of the ovarian cysts are non-cancerous but a casual approach cannot be taken towards the ovarian cysts as the human cost of letting the malignancy go unnoticed would be very high. If the cyst is larger then 5 cm in diameter and is not disappearing on its own despite waiting for some months then going for surgical removal is the best option to retain fertility.
